About this wine
Character
The Bourgogne Aligoté «Chaumont» AOC 2023 is a ripe, full-bodied white wine from Burgundy, grown on white marl in the Côte Chalonnaise. It thrives on juiciness and texture: round, silky, with concentrated fruit and a cool, mineral finish.
Terroir and origin
The vines were planted in 1964 in the Côte Chalonnaise between Mercurey and Givry, on a mid-slope (mi-pente) site with white marl soil. Jérôme Galeyrand farms 5.25 hectares; the winery is at his home in Saint-Philibert, while the barrel cellar is in Gevrey-Chambertin. He farms 70 percent of his vineyards organically and 30 percent according to sustainable principles, with pesticides excluded and mechanical ploughing.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Aligoté. The grapes are crushed and pressed in a vertical wooden press, with fermentation carried out by native yeasts. This is followed by twelve months in barrels with 20% new oak and a further two months in tank. No fining, only light filtration. No addition of SO₂ during vinification and ageing; only a minimal dose is added just before bottling.
On the palate
Golden yellow and clear in the glass. The nose is ripe and juicy: mellow pears, quince, nectarines and ripe pineapple, with hints of resin, lanolin and sweet spices. On the palate, the wine recalls concentrated yellow fruit juice, round and silky, coating the palate completely. The finish retains a fine mineral streak.
Special features
Jérôme Galeyrand came to Burgundy without a winemaking family: eight years in the cheese trade, then from 1996 harvest work at Domaine Alain Burguet in Gevrey-Chambertin, followed by the wine institute in Beaune and, in 2002, his first plot of 0.05 hectares. In 2020 he received a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France. Production is around 2000 cases, depending on the vintage.
