About this wine

Character

Deep, intense cherry red of medium transparency. The nose shows a ripe bouquet of black cherry, sweet plum and blackberry, accompanied by dog rose, a touch of undergrowth and cinnamon. Open, lush, with fine nuances.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from 0.8 hectares in Chambolle, Brochon and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux; in 2023 around 33 percent purchased grapes from Pommard are added. Jérôme Galeyrand arrived in Gevrey-Chambertin with no winemaking family behind him, bought his first 0.05-hectare plot in 2002, and today farms 5.25 hectares from Marsannay through Fixin to Gevrey-Chambertin, working out of Saint-Philibert. The vineyard work is organic, partly biodynamic, and highly labour-intensive.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir. The berries underwent a cold maceration of just under a week and fermented 85 percent destemmed in tanks, using exclusively native yeasts. Ageing lasted 12 to 16 months in used 228-litre oak barrels with around 20 percent new wood. No fining, no enzymes, only light filtration where necessary, and no or only very small doses of sulphur.

On the palate

Round, supple tannins carry an equally ripe fruit, joined by wild strawberry and dark raspberry. Full-bodied and supple, long and finely spiced.

Special features

Since 2019, the vineyard work has been organically certified. Vinification takes place in a small cellar at Jérôme Galeyrand's home, where every barrel receives personal attention; production totals around 2000 cases. In 2020, the winemaker was awarded a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
