About this wine
Character
A fresh, spicy Brouilly that reveals its transparency right in the glass: bright, translucent crimson. On the nose, sour cherry, raspberry, pomegranate juice and cranberry, along with verbena, liquorice and a hint of stone.
Terroir and origin
Brouilly, the southernmost cru of Beaujolais. The base is the clay-limestone Pilonière plot. After more than half the grapes there were lost to frost in 2019, Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret added a second plot on blue schist. Together the two total 0.7 hectares.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Gamay, harvested on 31 August 2023, 100% destemmed, fermented via carbonic maceration and aged in used barriques. The pH is 3.37, total sulphur under 10 mg/l. 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Fresh and transparent, with fine extract and lively acidity. Immensely juicy, carried by dark, crunchy berry fruit and a touch of plum, with a tannin like 240-grit sandpaper. On the finish, violet and liquorice.
Special features
Bret Brothers is the négociant project founded in 2001 by the Bret brothers for Beaujolais. They work exclusively with growers who farm organically or biodynamically; the grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in the cellar of Domaine La Soufrandière in Vinzelles.
