About this wine

Character

A Gamay that keeps its colour light and its fruit dark: light, transparent garnet in the glass, with sweet cherries, raspberries and richly ripe plums on the nose, interwoven with roses, violets, meadow herbs and a touch of liquorice.

Terroir and origin

The Climat La Bottière in Beaujolais covers 0.5 hectares, sits at 260 metres and faces south-west. Beneath a deep loamy topsoil lies granite. The loam shows in the wine, giving it its round, broad texture.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Gamay, harvested on 22 August 2022. The whole clusters underwent a ten-day carbonic maceration, after which the wine finished fermenting. Ten months of ageing in older Burgundian pièces followed. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined, with a pH of 3.51 and 29 mg/l total sulphur. 13.0% vol.

On the palate

Fine-grained tannin carries a round texture, beneath which lies deep, juicy dark fruit: cherries, cooked-down plums and berries, accompanied by liquorice and piquant notes of pits and skins. The most fleshy Beaujolais in the collection.

Food pairings

Mildly spiced tacos with meat, mole chicken and, vegetarian, paneer tikka.

Special features

Bret Brothers is the négociant project of Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret, founded in 2001 to vinify grapes from the Beaujolais crus to their own standards. The brothers work exclusively with growers who farm organically or biodynamically. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in the cellar of Domaine La Soufrandière in Vinzelles, with spontaneous fermentation and minimal sulphur use.
