About this wine
Character
A Brunello whose power turns inward. The nose opens earthy, with malt, forest leaves, porcini, tobacco and tree bark. Only with exposure to oxygen do raspberry, sour cherry, rosehip and fig emerge, followed by fresh Mediterranean herbs, violet and rose petals, and finally incense and liquorice.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the southwest of Montalcino, at 300 to 350 metres above sea level, facing toward the Maremma. It is the warmest part of Montalcino, with soils of sandstone and rocky marl. The Bartolommei family farms 16 hectares of vineyard there.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Sangiovese. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are destemmed, gently pressed and fermented for two weeks with natural yeasts. Ageing takes place in 54-hl casks of French Allier oak, after which the wine rests for twelve months in bottle.
On the palate
Silky and carried by a delicate fruit sweetness, with an acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its maturity. The 14.0% ABV never comes to the fore, leaving only a faint sweet note. The impression remains almost weightless.
Food pairings
With comforting Italian cuisine: strozzapreti with broccoli, olives, burrata and balsamic onions, branzino con pancetta, or tagliata with red wine jus and rosemary gnocchi.
Distinctive features
The translucent garnet red with mahogany highlights toward the rim signals what this wine delivers: instead of the power expected from a warm site, this Riserva offers fragrance, floral finesse and a texture you drink more than chew.
