About this wine
Character
The Il Guercio IGT 2023 is a single-varietal Sangiovese from Tuscany, aged without oak by Sean O'Callaghan. The wine carries the nickname the Tuscans gave the British-born winemaker with the blind right eye: dark, dense fruit, ripe acidity, velvety tannins, plus the freshness of high altitude.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in an old terraced vineyard near Lamole at 650 metres above sea level. Tenuta di Carleone farms around 30 hectares between Radda and Gaiole, in the historic heartland of Chianti Classico. Fresh wind, cool nights and wide day-to-night temperature swings keep the acidity lively, while limestone and clay lend mineral depth.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Sangiovese. The grapes are foot-trodden, fermentation starts spontaneously with native yeasts, and ageing takes place in cement tank. O'Callaghan deliberately forgoes oak so that fruit and origin remain unadorned; the wine is neither fined nor filtered in the cellar.
On the palate
The nose opens with ripe figs, sweet cherries, wild raspberries and elderberry, underscored by ethereal notes of rosemary, thyme, juniper and candied rose petals. On the palate the wine feels like velvet and silk, its vibrant acidity playing against the fruit sweetness for a remarkably easy drinkability.
Food recommendations
A wine made for the table: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, braised leg of lamb with rosemary or mature Pecorino Toscano.
Distinctive features
Sean O'Callaghan founded Tenuta di Carleone in 2012 together with Karl Egger, on an estate first documented in 1078 as Castiglioni. Il Guercio comes in at 13.0% vol. and is dry.
