About this wine

Character

The Chianti Classico DOCG 2023 from Tenuta di Carleone is pure Sangiovese from Radda in Chianti, built on freshness rather than fullness. In the glass, sparkling ruby red with delicate violet hues; on the nose, plenty of fresh fruit — sour cherry, raspberry and cranberry — joined by violet and rose, fine leather, undergrowth, spice and hints of rosemary and thyme.

Terroir and origin

The roughly 30 hectares of vines lie between Radda and Gaiole, in the historic heartland of Chianti Classico, at altitudes of up to 700 metres. Constant wind, cool nights and wide temperature swings between day and night cool the grapes, while limestone and clay lend mineral depth.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Sangiovese, partly from vines over 60 years old. Hand-harvested, foot-trodden, 40% whole clusters, two months of fermentation in steel tank without additives and with natural yeasts. Aged in used barriques and cement, unfiltered and unfined.

On the palate

Light-bodied and elegant, carried by vibrant acidity. A distinct mineral note lingers long on the palate. Dry, 13.5% ABV.

Food pairing suggestions

A wine to enjoy alone in the glass, though its elegant structure also makes it a fine match for fish dishes and flavourful vegetable preparations.

Special features

Sean O'Callaghan, nicknamed "Il Guercio" by the Tuscans, studied in Geisenheim and worked at Schlossgut Diel before founding Tenuta di Carleone together with Karl Egger in 2012. The estate was first documented in 1078 under the name Castiglioni. This Chianti Classico carries the Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso.
