About this wine

Character

A Sangiovese with a cool core. Ripe acidity carries the fruit, the tannins are velvety, and at 13.5% Vol. the wine remains agile despite its density. In magnum format, ageing proceeds more slowly and evenly.

Terroir and origin

The vineyards of Tenuta di Carleone lie between Radda and Gaiole, in the historic heart of Chianti Classico, at altitudes of up to 700 metres. Fresh wind constantly sweeps across the vine rows there, the nights stay cool, and the temperature difference between day and night is considerable. Limestone and clay give the wines mineral depth. Some of the Sangiovese vines are over 60 years old.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Sangiovese. Sean O'Callaghan, whom the Tuscans call "Il Guercio", founded the estate in 2012 together with Karl Egger and works in the cellar with concrete tanks and large, used wooden casks rather than new barriques. Fermentation is carried out with natural yeasts, without filtering or fining. His stated aim: that Sangiovese should taste of Sangiovese, not of toast and vanilla.

On the palate

Black cherry and fig form the core, framed by fine spice and a floral note. The acidity keeps the wine cool and upright, the tannin remains finely woven, the finish mineral.

Food pairings

With Bistecca alla Fiorentina, with braised leg of lamb with rosemary, or with mature Pecorino Toscano.

Special features

Around 30 hectares of vines on an estate first documented in 1078 as Castiglioni. The 2021 vintage is offered here in a 1500ml magnum.
