About this wine
Character
A Sangiovese that favours freshness over power. Sean O'Callaghan, whom the Tuscans call "Il Guercio", wants Sangiovese to taste like Sangiovese: no toast notes, no vanilla, but dark cherry and herbal spice over taut acidity.
Terroir and origin
Tenuta di Carleone's roughly 30 hectares of vineyards lie between Radda and Gaiole, in the historic heartland of Chianti Classico, at altitudes of up to 700 metres. A cool breeze sweeps over the vine rows, nights are cool, and the temperature swings between day and night are pronounced. Limestone and clay give the wines mineral depth.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Sangiovese. Some of the estate's vines are over 60 years old. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts, ageing in concrete tanks and large, used oak barrels rather than new barriques. The wine is neither filtered nor fined.
On the palate
Dry and precise, carried by lively acidity. Black cherry and dark berries stay crisp, the tannin is fine-grained, and the finish is marked by the minerality of the limestone. 13.5% ABV.
Food pairings
Acidity and fine tannin call for Tuscan cuisine: bistecca alla Fiorentina, pappardelle al cinghiale or aged Pecorino Toscano. The wine also shows its substance alongside grilled vegetables and lentil dishes.
Special features
O'Callaghan studied in Geisenheim and worked as cellar master at Schlossgut Diel before founding Tenuta di Carleone with Austrian entrepreneur Karl Egger in 2012. The estate was first documented in 1078 under the name Castiglioni.
