About this wine

Character

The Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante DOCG 2018 is a single-varietal Sangiovese from four sites outside Montalcino. It is taut and sinewy in structure, the fruit remains vivid, and the structure leads. Nothing here is polished up: the wine shows exactly what six hectares of consistently biodynamic work can yield.

Terroir and origin

The six hectares lie in the immediate vicinity of the Biondi-Santi estate, at 300 to 400 metres above sea level. Four vineyard sites make up the wine: Pian dell'Orino, Pian Bossolino, Scopeta and Cancello. The vines root in soils of fossilized shells and galestro. Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Erbach have mapped these soils geologically by hand since they began their work in 1997.

Grape variety and vinification

Sangiovese Grosso, single-varietal and unblended. Pruning follows the lunar calendar, and in the vineyard, nettle and chamomile teas replace chemical treatments. In the cellar, the wine ferments spontaneously in an open wooden vat and then ages in large casks, without oenological intervention.

On the palate

Dense, with fine-grained, silky tannin and an acidity that carries the wine rather than sharpening it. Aromatically, ripe dark cherry, wild berries and herbs, with earthy notes and spicy oak behind them.

Food pairings

With Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised wild boar ragù and ossobuco. Also with long-aged Pecorino Toscano.

Special features

Yield reduction is extreme: one vine yields one bottle of wine. Work is done in strict biodynamic fashion. After the 2008 Brunellopoli scandal, the estate published the analytical data of its harvests.
