About this wine
Character
A Brunello that carries power and lightness at the same time. The fruit appears dark yet translucent, buoyed by striking freshness: mulberry, rosehip, plum, cassis, elderberry and blackberry, complemented by sweet cherries, without ever becoming heavy or opulent. Alongside this, dried herbs, oregano, sage, rosemary and pepper, and with aeration a second layer of undergrowth, cedarwood, liquorice and dark chocolate, delicate rose and a vegetal note between fennel and ripe tomato.
Terroir and origin
In 2020 the grapes come from Cancello Rosso, Scopeta and further parts of Pian Bassolino, situated at 300 to 400 metres. Calcareous clay, easily weathered Tertiary marl, as well as gravel, sandstone and flysch soils define these vineyards. A very dry winter was followed by a changeable spring with snowfall on 26 March, then recurring rain through to harvest. July and August brought sun and heat, September warm days and cool nights.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Sangiovese Grosso. Fermentation begins spontaneously in open wooden vats, ageing takes place in large casks, with no oenological interventions. Yield reduction is strict: one vine, one bottle. 14.0% vol., vinified dry.
On the palate
Uncompromisingly structured and gripping. The acidity is racy and invigorating, the tannin firm and demanding, never coarse; both draw a straight line through the entire course. The fruit is not spread wide but guided along a fine red thread, interspersed with flashes of spicy and balsamic nuances. The wine finishes with mineral notes of iron, limestone and stone. It already offers pleasure today and has many years of development ahead of it.
Special features
Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Erbach have farmed six hectares exclusively with Sangiovese since 1997, following strict biodynamic principles: nettle and chamomile tea instead of chemical treatments, pruning according to the lunar calendar. They have created their own geological maps for their vineyard sites.
