About this wine
Character
The Piandorino is the entry point into the wines of Pian Dell'Orino and shows their signature style in a smaller format: juicy, clear, unpolished. An uncomplicated Sangiovese with great drinkability, yet with no shortage of depth.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the Moro, Cancello Rosso and Pian Bassolino vineyards at 320 to 480 metres, facing south-east. The soils change over short distances: calcareous clay, weathered marl, blue-grey Pliocene limestone, as well as Alberese and flysch. Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Erbach have run their estate outside Montalcino since 1997 and have created their own geological maps for it.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Sangiovese from young vines, experimental plots and cooler sites; the vines were between 7 and 13 years old at harvest. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are sorted three times: in the vineyard, on intake and at the sorting table. Spontaneous fermentation, 18 days on the skins, followed by 17 months in a 15-hectolitre cask. 13.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
Deep garnet red with violet reflections towards the rim. On the nose, intense fruit of cassis, dark berries and sweet cherries, backed by a precise mineral freshness. On the palate, juicy, with sweetly perceived fruit, refreshing acidity and fine-grained tannin that coats the palate and keeps the wine lively.
Food pairings
A wine for traditional Italian cuisine: lasagne, beetroot risotto with smoked burrata or chicken thigh with rosemary potatoes and red wine jus.
Special features
Work is carried out under strict biodynamic principles: pruning according to the lunar calendar, preparations of nettle and chamomile tea instead of chemical treatments, and no oenological interventions in the cellar. Yield reduction follows the rule of one vine, one bottle. Only Sangiovese is grown on the estate's six hectares.
