About this wine

Character

The Castel Campan IGT 2019 brings together Cabernet Franc and Merlot at the Manincor estate in Kaltern: dark, juicy, velvety by nature. Drinkability and artisanal seriousness are not mutually exclusive here.

Terroir and origin

The Merlot grows in the Tatzenschrot vineyard at Manincor, a south-east-facing slope at 250 metres above sea level planted with the oldest Merlot vines; the site ranks among South Tyrol's warmest. The Cabernet Franc comes from the Seehorf, where it develops its dark-fruited power on clayey limestone gravel.

Grape variety and vinification

65% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot. The 2019 vintage brought a long ripening period on the vine amid sunny autumn weather, yielding only a small quantity of grapes of exceptional quality. Fermentation on the skins began spontaneously in the large wooden vat and lasted four weeks, after which the wine matured for 20 months in barriques, half of them new. 14.0% vol., vinified dry.

On the palate

The nose initially appears monolithic and needs air, then beneath a layer of dark Criollo chocolate, red and black fruits emerge: cherry, blackberry, mulberry, plum, tempered by black pepper, cardamom and dark tobacco. On the palate, ripe dark fruit of cherry, blackberry and plum compote leads, contoured by youthfully flaky tannin and carried by a broad, beautifully integrated vein of acidity.

Food pairings

Sichuan fish-fragrant eggplant, eel in red wine sauce or white bean stew with morcilla.

Special features

Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg took over Manincor in 1991, and the estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2005. The cellar, built into the slope, relies on gravity instead of pumps, and the red wines ferment one hundred percent spontaneously. Helmuth Zozin has been estate director since 2008.
