About this wine
Character
A pale, red-fruited Pinot Noir full of energy: fresh, austere and crystalline, with taut acidity as its backbone. A wine that will benefit from a few more years of cellaring.
Terroir and origin
The 9.41-hectare premier cru vineyard Île des Vergelesses lies in Pernand-Vergelesses, flanked by Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses and Pernand-Vergelesses. The soil consists of stony, iron-rich red limestone marl, with a terroir of grand cru caliber. The east-facing vines average 40 years of age, some over 80 years old and dating back to 1938. Ploughing is done with the four horses Diva, Epi, Farandole and Gipsy.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, spontaneously fermented in wooden vats with 100% whole clusters. The wine was then transferred by gravity into barriques and tonneaux with a low proportion of new oak, where it remained undisturbed for around 14 months. It is usually bottled directly from the barrel, with minimal sulfur addition, without fining or filtration.
On the palate
The nose is ethereal: barberry, mint and myrtle, along with sandalwood, rose blossom, sour cherry, orange and wild strawberry, underscored by foliage, undergrowth, chalk and warm earth. On the palate it is powerful and driven, vibrantly mineral, with sour cherry, blood orange and pomegranate. The tannins have grip, the dry extract carries through, and the finish lingers long and crystalline.
Food pairings
Saddle of venison with quince and chestnuts, duck breast with braised chicory and gratin dauphinois, or Chettinad with mixed mushrooms such as porcini, shiitake and chestnut royale.
