About this wine
Character
A Savagnin aged under the flor yeast veil: oxidative in its élevage, precise in expression. Walnut, dried herbs and curry define the aromatics, with lemon and fresh apple underneath.
Terroir and origin
Nathalie Grand tends plots stretching from Arbois through Passenans to the steep slopes of Château-Chalon. The vines grow on grey limestone, grey and red marl, in places with dolomitic influence; some parcels are over a hundred years old. The Grand family has worked here since 1692, today on 9.5 hectares, after Emmanuel and Nathalie Grand reduced the estate from 24 hectares in 2015.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Savagnin. Emmanuel Grand oversees the cellar and vinifies in old barrels with minimal sulphur; the wine ages under the flor yeast veil. With the 2018 vintage, the estate began its conversion to organic farming.
On the palate
Dry and taut in structure. Saline minerality carries the nutty spice, the acidity stays fine, and the finish is long and tensile.
Food pairings
Comté and aged cheeses, chicken with mushrooms or in vin jaune sauce, rich dishes in creamy sauce, also smoked fish.
Highlights
Bottled in the 620 ml format. In 2020 the Guide Hachette named Emmanuel and Nathalie Grand «Vignerons de l'année», an award recognizing the Château-Chalon Vin de Voile 2015. The estate bottles around 45,000 bottles a year, with labels designed by French artist Bast.
