About this wine

Character

A Savagnin that demands patience and rewards it. Under the flor yeast, the wine has gained notes of walnut, dried herbs and curry, without losing its freshness. Oxidative aging, not oxidized: the spice sits above a clear, mineral core.

Terroir and origin

Domaine Grand farms 9.5 hectares between Arbois and Château-Chalon. The vines grow on grey limestone, on grey and red marl, partly with dolomitic influence; some parcels are over 100 years old and root correspondingly deep. Nathalie Grand oversees the vineyards from Arbois through Passenans to the steep slopes of Château-Chalon.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Savagnin. Emmanuel Grand is responsible for the cellar and ages the wine in old barrels, under the yeast veil and with minimal sulfur. The estate has farmed organically since 2018, on a reduced area since 2015: the family then scaled the operation down from 24 to 9.5 hectares in favor of quality. Around 45,000 bottles are produced each year.

On the palate

Dry, with a rich, compact texture. A lively acidity and a salty minerality keep the wine taut, with the nutty spice lingering long.

Food pairings

With aged Comté and Morbier, with poultry in morel sauce and with leg of lamb with herbs.

Special features

The Guide Hachette named Emmanuel and Nathalie Grand "Vignerons de l'année" in 2020, an honor earned for their Château-Chalon En Beaumont Vin de Voile 2015. The labels are designed by French artist Bast. The estate has been family-owned since 1692, now in its ninth generation.
