About this wine
Character
The 2007 shows Mourvèdre at its most velvety: complex rather than loud, sensual rather than showy. That is exactly what Éric de Saint Victor aims for, who joined the estate in 1989 and has run it since 2000. His wines are meant to be hedonistic without pushing themselves to the fore.
Terroir and origin
Château de Pibarnon sits at the highest point of Bandol. The vines stand in an amphitheatre of restanques, centuries-old, hand-built stone terraces that climb the slope up to a view of the Mediterranean. Each tier has its own microclimate. The subsoil consists of blue Triassic marl containing prehistoric fossils.
Grape variety and vinification
Mourvèdre leads the blend, complemented by Cinsault. Catherine and Henri de Saint Victor converted the château into a Provençal bastide and built a gravity-flow cellar that was ahead of its time. The wine is vinified dry and reaches 14.0% ABV.
On the palate
Deep ruby red with brownish reflections at the rim. On the nose, ripe dark berries, mocha, dark tobacco and leather, underscored by garrigue herbs. The palate is full-bodied, the tannins mature and velvety, the acidity carries through to a long finish marked by Mourvèdre's liquorice note.
Food recommendations
Braised lamb with rosemary, pink-roasted saddle of venison or braised wild boar dishes. Also pairs with mature hard cheese.
Special features
When the de Saint Victor family took over the estate, Bandol was barely known. From 16 hectares in 1977, the estate has grown to around 50 hectares, divided into 220 individual parcels. Pibarnon's red Bandol needs ten years, sometimes more; this vintage has that behind it.
