About this wine
Character
A Bandol that shows Mourvèdre's velvety side: aromatic and lively, with dark meatiness at its core. On the nose, ripe plums, blackberries and very ripe dark berries, along with graphite and crushed limestone, undergrowth and foliage, garrigue and juniper with a hint of pepper.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the amphitheater of Château de Pibarnon, opening toward the Mediterranean, at the highest point of Bandol. These are the restanques, centuries-old, hand-stacked stone terraces, each with its own microclimate. The subsoil consists of clay, limestone and chalk from the Triassic, and blue marl containing prehistoric fossils.
Grape variety and vinification
70 percent Mourvèdre and 30 percent Grenache, harvested from younger vines aged ten to twenty years. The berries are completely destemmed, fermentation lasts around three weeks, after which the wine ages for 18 months in foudres and Burgundian pièces. Éric de Saint Victor has run the estate since 2000, and cellar master Marie Laroze has overseen the 220 individual parcels since 2008.
On the palate
Warm, juicy dark fruit carries a velvety, elegant texture, along with sweet spices and a cool note of crushed limestone. The structure initially reads as simple yet holds real complexity. Dry, 14.5% alcohol by volume.
Food pairings
Provençal roast pork with bay leaf, herbs and olives, loin of lamb on cinnamon-cardamom rice with baked plums, or, for a vegetarian option, falafel with honey, cinnamon and date rice.
Special features
This cuvée is designed to make the house's hedonistic style approachable even in young vintages: ready to drink yet capable of aging well.
