About this wine
Character
Château de Pibarnon's ambitious take on rosé: powerful and concentrated, yet precise and elegant. Structure, spice and terroir clearly take precedence over fruit, and this wine's complexity extends far beyond it.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the estate's amphitheatre, which opens towards the Mediterranean, at the highest point of Bandol. The restanques, hand-built stone terraces, climb the slope and give each level its own microclimate; around 50 hectares are spread across 220 individual plots. The subsoil consists of clay, limestone and Triassic chalk, along with blue Triassic marl containing prehistoric fossils.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Mourvèdre from selected old vines. The juice is obtained by the saignée method and ferments slowly and spontaneously at around 22 °C; the wine is then aged half in 30-hectolitre Stockinger foudres and half in amphorae. Éric de Saint Victor has run the estate since 2000, with winemaker Marie Laroze on board since 2008.
On the palate
Blood orange, sour cherry, red vine peach and dried apricot come across as deliberately restrained and lightly dried; all the more distinct are garrigue, cinnamon, allspice, liquorice and damp clay. A fine-grained, spicy tannic grip lends contour, while the ripe, taut acidity provides drive. The long finish lingers on orange zest and liquorice with a bitter, spicy phenolic edge.
Food pairings
This wine calls for robust company: pan-fried red mullet, braised leg of lamb with herbes de Provence, an intense bouillabaisse or pink-roasted duck breast.
Special features
A remarkably age-worthy rosé that benefits from air in the decanter while young; after a few days it recalls a lightly salted caramel ice cream with notes of liquorice and apricot. Éric de Saint Victor's ambition: hedonistic, sensuous wines without ostentation.
