About this wine

Character

Dark fruit and balsamic spice meet an ethereal coolness: sour cherry, blackberry, raspberry and cassis alongside tar, liquorice and graphite, plus juniper, rosemary, dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. As intense as that sounds, the wine remains delicate and elegant.

Terroir and origin

Pibarnon sits at the highest point of Bandol; from the terrace, the view sweeps across an amphitheatre of vines down to the Mediterranean. At its heart are the restanques, centuries-old, hand-stacked stone terraces that climb the slope, giving each level its own microclimate. The roughly 50 hectares stand on Triassic rock with blue marl and prehistoric fossils.

Grape variety and vinification

Mourvèdre, complemented by Cinsault. Éric de Saint Victor, raised among the barrels, has run the estate since 2000, working towards sensual wines without ostentation. Since 2008, cellar master Marie Laroze has brought precision to the 220 individual parcels. Work takes place in the gravity-flow cellar designed by Catherine and Henri de Saint Victor.

On the palate

Juicy, cool and full of fruit expression, yet taut and lean. The graphite note draws a linear, cooling corset around the wine, which carries its 14.5% ABV and the warm, Mediterranean-influenced climate with ease. On the finish, the fruit turns fine and racy once more.

Food pairings

With sour veal tongue and lentil-sherry vinaigrette, with ragout of leg of lamb with baby turnips and tomato, or with roasted aubergine with curry yoghurt, pomegranate and almond.

Distinctive features

The Bandol Rouge from Pibarnon needs time: ten years, sometimes more.
