About this wine

Character

Éric de Saint Victor, who has led Château de Pibarnon since 2000, seeks sensual wines without ostentation. This rosé shows exactly that: full-bodied, multi-layered, with structure and depth, and a build made for aging.

Terroir and origin

The vines stand at the highest point of Bandol, in an amphitheater of rows that opens onto a view all the way to the Mediterranean. The restanques, centuries-old hand-stacked stone terraces, climb the slope, each level bringing its own microclimate. The subsoil is Triassic rock with blue marl and prehistoric fossils.

Grape variety and vinification

Mourvèdre and Cinsault make up the cuvée. Here the Mourvèdre shows itself as velvety rather than aggressive, complex rather than loud. Winemaker Marie Laroze, with the estate since 2008, vinifies the estate's 220 individual parcels separately. The result is a dry rosé at 13.5% vol. with real substance.

On the palate

Salmon pink in the glass, on the nose reserved red berries and fine spice, along with the Mourvèdre's note of licorice. The wine flows full-bodied and dense, the texture stays fine, the structure tangible all the way through the finish.

Food pairings

With bouillabaisse, with pan-seared red mullet, with lamb ragout with Provençal herbs, or with classically prepared quail.

Distinctive features

In 1977 the estate covered 16 hectares; today it is around 50. The grapes flow into a gravity-flow cellar that was ahead of its time when it was built.
