About this wine
Character
The Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2020 is a Bandol from Provence in which Mourvèdre sets the tone. Intense purple-red with violet highlights, underpinned by a pronounced acid structure and present tannin, with a cool, fresh vein running through it. 14.5% vol., dry.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in an amphitheatre facing the sea. The restanques, hand-built stone terraces, climb up the slope, each tier with its own microclimate. The soil: blue Triassic marl with clay, limestone and chalk, interspersed with prehistoric fossils. Only the best and oldest vines, at a medium altitude of 250 metres, are used for this wine.
Grape variety and vinification
A blend of 90% Mourvèdre, with yields of around 30 hl/ha. Fermentation takes about three weeks, after which the wine ages parcel by parcel for 20 months in barriques, tonneaux and foudres of varying provenance, matched to each parcel. Éric de Saint Victor has run the estate since 2000, and cellar master Marie Laroze has overseen the 220 individual parcels since 2008.
On the palate
Ethereal on the nose: lavender, rose, mint and juniper mingle with ripe cherries, plums, blackberries and a touch of elderberry, along with blood orange and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, ripe black cherry, crisp plum, light liquorice, cinnamon, a touch of tonka bean, violet and pepper. With enough air in the decanter, the wine already shows itself open, with beautiful length.
Food pairings
Rib eye medium rare with rosemary butter and baked potatoes, grilled rack of lamb with thyme and rosemary, or, for a vegetarian option, a wild mushroom ragout with usukuchi shoyu.
Highlights
A vin de garde from an estate that started in 1977 with 16 hectares and today farms around 50, with a gravity-flow cellar that was ahead of its time. The 1500 ml magnum format gives the wine time.
