About this wine

Character

A velvety red wine that carries its 14.5% vol. without harshness. Here the Mourvèdre shows its most charming side: complex rather than loud, dense rather than angular. This is the estate's signature, sensual wines without ostentation, and the half-bottle offers a complete impression of it.

Terroir and origin

Château de Pibarnon sits at the highest point of Bandol; from the terrace, the view sweeps over an amphitheatre of vines down to the Mediterranean. Around 50 hectares are spread across the restanques, centuries-old, hand-built stone terraces that rise up the slope like tiers, each level forming its own microclimate. The subsoil is Triassic rock with blue marl and prehistoric fossils.

Grape variety and vinification

Mourvèdre leads, with Cinsault as its complement. Éric de Saint Victor, at the helm since 2000, grew up among the estate's barrels; cellar master Marie Laroze has brought Burgundian precision to the work across the 220 individual parcels since 2008. Harvested grapes are moved into a gravity-flow cellar, laid out by the family early on.

On the palate

Powerful yet supple: dark forest berries and ripe plum carry the opening, followed by wild leather and Provençal herbs. The tannin is finely polished, freshness keeps the wine upright, and the finish remains spicy and dry.

Food pairings

With braised dishes from French cuisine: braised leg of lamb, wild boar goulash with juniper, roast beef or beef fillet with herb butter. An aged raw-milk cheese also suits it well.

Distinctive features

Pibarnon's Bandol Rouge needs time, ten years and sometimes more. The 375ml bottle makes this ageing potential accessible in a smaller format.
