About this wine

Character

This Pinot Noir is a darkly toned Auxey-Duresses from old vines that expresses its origin through structure rather than fruit. The colour is a slightly translucent, intense ruby red. The nose is dominated by undergrowth, forest floor, mushrooms and leaves, underscored by faintly yeasty notes, wild berries and dried cherries, alongside fermented cardamom and tobacco.

Terroir and origin

Auxey-Duresses lies at the heart of a valley that begins on the Côte de Beaune and stretches through the Hautes-Côtes along the Route de La Rochepot. The Moulin aux Moines vineyard is a monopole plot of the domaine. The Vieilles Vignes stand in the upper part of the Clos, where the limestone marl is differently composed, the slope steeper and the soil drier: 0.90 hectares at 300 metres above sea level, planted in the 1950s.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir, hand-harvested at a yield of 38 to 44 hectolitres per hectare. Fermentation occurred spontaneously, with around 10 percent of the grapes going into the vat as whole clusters with stems. The wine was aged in Burgundian pièces and tonneaux with no new oak.

On the palate

Juicy, firm and serious, with a slightly sweet core around which dark, earthy and stony notes revolve. The tannin lends fine resistance, the acidity stays clear, and a rustic goût de campagne gives the wine contour. Alcohol content is 13.0 percent, the wine is dry.

Distinctive features

Clos du Moulin aux Moines was founded in 962 by monks of the Abbey of Cluny and ranks among the oldest wine estates in Burgundy; the cellars date from the 11th and 15th centuries. Since 2008, Willy Roulendes has run the domaine and converted the 16 hectares to biodynamic farming. Work is carried out by hand or with horses.
