About this wine
Character
Deep sour cherry red with violet highlights. The nose is seductive: sweet sour cherry meets wild raspberry, blackberry and cranberry, joined with air by allspice and plum, alongside hints of fine chocolate and black pepper. The oak is skilfully applied and already lends structure to the aroma.
Terroir and origin
The Jechtinger Enselberg is a well-ventilated, west-facing site overlooking the Rhine plain. The subsoil consists partly of lighter and partly of dark, stony volcanic rock, topped by a fine layer of loess. The grapes come from two parcels, planted in 1999 and 2003, 100 percent with Burgundian Pinot Noir clones.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Spätburgunder, vinified dry, 12.5% vol. Aged 18 months in French barrique with 40 percent new oak. The winery, built into the hillside in terraces since 2013, works on the gravity principle; the ageing is overseen by winemakers Uwe Barnickel and Christian Häuber.
On the palate
Juicy, sweet red and dark fruit, fine minerality, followed by a long finish in which fruit, freshness and structure stay in balance. The wine already drinks wonderfully now while holding very good ageing potential.
Special features
The Franz Keller winery in the Kaiserstuhl has combined fine dining and winegrowing on volcanic soils since 1892. Friedrich Keller has run the 35 hectares since 2016, the fourth generation, gradually converting them to organic farming with biodynamic elements; the guiding principle "as little as possible, as much as necessary" goes back to Fritz Keller.
