About this wine
Character
A concentrated red wine with substance and clear contours. In the 1500 ml magnum, ageing proceeds more slowly, and the 2015 vintage retains its freshness. 14.5% ABV, vinified dry.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on the barren slate soils near Trujillo, in the heart of Extremadura, where Bodegas Habla farms 200 hectares. Scorching hot summers and bitterly cold winters force the roots deep into the rock, giving the wine its mineral backbone.
Grape variety and vinification
A cuvée of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Vinification follows the Roman model and relies solely on gravity: the semi-underground winery moves the grapes downward without any pumps. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, while the ageing cellars are lined with black slate and chestnut wood. Winemakers Florent Dumeau and Eduardo de José Prada oversee the process.
On the palate
Dense, firm tannin carried by lively acidity. Aromatically, dark forest berries and ripe black cherry, joined by bell pepper, spice and a hint of chocolate. The finish remains long and mineral.
Food pairings
Pairs well with braised ox cheeks, herb-crusted rack of lamb or a beef fillet. A mature Manchego also suits it beautifully.
Special features
Juan Tirado and José Civantos founded Bodegas Habla in 1999, after eight years spent searching for the right terroir. The 12,000-square-metre building by GAP Arquitectos sits partly below ground, its copper skin patinating over the years; it received the Extremadura Architecture Award.
