Habla Nr 37 2022

A dense Malbec with dark fruit and spicy depth. Blackberry and black cherry lead, overlaid with a floral note of violet. The tannin is present and polished, the frame powerful, the line clear.

For eight years, Juan Tirado and José Civantos searched for the right terroir before founding Bodegas Habla in 1999 in Trujillo, in the heart of Extremadura. The 200 hectares lie on austere slate. Summers here are scorching, winters bitterly cold, and it is precisely these conditions that drive the vines deep and the wine towards concentration.

Single-varietal Malbec, aged dry. The partly underground bodega, designed by GAP Arquitectos, processes the grapes by gravity in the Roman tradition, with fermentation carried out in stainless steel. The oenologists responsible for the wines are Florent Dumeau of Bordeaux and Eduardo de José Prada.

Powerful and dense, carried by ripe, juicy fruit and a tannin that lends structure without weighing it down. The finish remains precise and long.

The Numbers series follows a strict principle: each number appears exactly once and is never repeated. Nr 37 thus remains tied to the 2022 vintage. Its name comes from the legend of Michelangelo, who is said to have struck his completed Moses with a hammer and cried, "Now speak!" The copper skin of the 12,000-square-metre building patinas with the years; the concept was honoured with the Extremadura Architecture Award.
