About this wine

Character

Dark ruby red with a deep core, generously built without ever turning heavy. The 2021 vintage offers pomegranate, mulberry, blackberry and elderberry, followed by black cherry and dried plum. Above the fruit lie floral notes of mallow, hibiscus and violet. The wine's name derives from the pomegranate.

Terroir and origin

The Campo Rotaliano forms an indentation of the Adige valley between two mountain ridges. For centuries the Noce river has carried down deposits of limestone, granite and porphyry; within the area, microzones can be distinguished by their soil composition. Granato grows on around four hectares, spread across three sites in Mezzolombardo, on old pergola vineyards planted on alluvial soil, gravel and pebbles.

Grape variety and vinification

Teroldego, single-variety. Elisabetta Foradori took over the estate in 1984 and revived the grape variety through years of mass selection carried out with the University of Milan and the San Michele research centre; she has vinified Granato since 1986. Spontaneous fermentation in large open vats, followed by 15 months in tonneau and a further 15 months of bottle ageing. Average annual production stands at 20,000 bottles.

On the palate

Velvety and broad, with fruit rich in extract held together by noble tannin. A fine vein of acidity keeps the density in motion and carries it into a long finish. In its youth the decanter helps; the wine shows its true character after at least five years of bottle ageing.

Special features

Gambero Rosso has awarded it its highest accolade 36 times; Granato is regarded as one of Italy's most significant red wines. The estate's 28 hectares are Demeter-certified, 80 percent of them planted with Teroldego, with the Demeter logo appearing on the label. Emilio Foradori has led the winemaking since 2013. Magnum of 1500 ml, 13.0% vol., dry.
