About this wine
Character
A Grenache that doesn't flaunt the heat of its origin but stays transparent: clearly defined, cool in impression, built on pace rather than mass. The dark fruit sits on a spicy base, the wine stays slender and drinks away quickly.
Terroir and origin
Serrat de la Plane means "rocky high plateau" in Catalan. The plot lies in south-western Roussillon, not far from the Spanish border, on weathered gneiss soil, and is permanently exposed to cool wind. This air movement cools the grapes in the hot climate and brings a freshness that Mediterranean Grenache rarely shows. The yield is barely 10 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Grenache from ancient vines. The vineyard was due to be grubbed up before Georg Meissner took it over. The biodynamic winemaker, a lecturer at Geisenheim and trainer for the respekt-BIODYN winegrowers' group, farms it together with Flo Busch, with whom he also shares the cellar. The quantity produced is tiny.
On the palate
The nose shows blackberry and mulberry with a touch of plum compote, underscored by underbrush, garrigue and black olives. The palate entry is juicy, with deep dark fruit reminiscent of amarena cherry and red berries. The tannins feel almost silky, the herbaceous, spicy notes hold the picture together, and beneath it all lies the bass note of the weathered soils.
Food pairings
With a Provençal vegetable terrine with pistou, with oven-baked moulet with ratatouille, or with grilled lamb cutlets.
Special features
A rescued piece of old viticulture: minimal yields, a tiny quantity, Demeter logo on the label. Bottled at Moulin de Breuil in Montesquieu-des-Albères, 14.0% vol., dry.
