About this wine
Character
A red wine that shows what Carignan can do once the vines are old enough: clear, precise, with crunchy fruit and a finely polished texture. The name Vindemiatrix belongs to the star Epsilon Virginis in the constellation Virgo — the Romans waited for its appearance in the sky before beginning the grape harvest. From this came the Italian vendemmia and the French vendange.
Terroir and origin
The vineyard lies in the south-western Roussillon, not far from the Spanish border. The vines stand on a terrace, protected by stone walls, rock and adjoining forest. Beneath the surface lies weathered gneiss, which lends the wine minerality and depth. Georg Meissner took over the plot when it was due to be uprooted.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Carignan from vines dating back to 1899. Yields are around 9 hl/ha. Meissner, a lecturer in biodynamic viticulture at Geisenheim and responsible for agriculture, cellar and research at Alois Lageder in South Tyrol, farms the vineyard together with Flo Busch, with whom he also shares the cellar. 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Fresh and juicy. The fruit feels crunchier than the nose suggests, where sour cherry appears with a density reminiscent of liqueur, alongside mulberry and blackberry, a touch of yeast, bresaola, garrigue, black olive tapenade and crushed dark rock. Fruit, acidity and a gripping tannin are tightly interwoven, carrying a finely polished texture.
Distinctive features
Meissner produces only two wines, both in tiny quantities. The Vindemiatrix comes from vines that have survived a century and would have disappeared without his commitment. The label carries the Demeter logo.
