About this wine

Character

A Grenache that shows transparency and density at once: fullness and clarity, ripeness and coolness. In the glass, a fairly translucent purple, with a cool, austere and clear expression.

Terroir and origin

Serrat de la Plane means "stony plateau" in Catalan. That's the name of the site where the vineyard sits, and the wine takes its name from it. The old Grenache vineyard in Roussillon stands on dry, stony, weathered gneiss soil and is permanently exposed to the wind. This air movement cools the grapes in the hot climate and preserves freshness. Yields are around 9 hl/ha.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Grenache from ancient vines. Dr. Georg Meissner, lecturer in biodynamic viticulture at Geisenheim University, took over two vineyards in southwestern Roussillon that would otherwise have been grubbed up. He shares the day-to-day work, as well as the cellar, with Flo Busch. Quantities produced are tiny.

On the palate

The fruit appears as dark as on the nose. Its sweet core is no bigger than a pea; otherwise the wine presents completely dry: blackberry, blueberry and cherry over powdery tannin, carried by brilliant acidity. Juicy and austere, with power and grace at once.

Special features

Two wines are made here, Vindemiatrix and Serrat de la Plane. This one comes from the exposed plateau, where the wind provides the coolness. The label carries the Demeter logo.
