About this wine
Character
A juicy, finesse-driven Pinot Noir from the La Justice site in Gevrey, dry and at 13.0% vol. The fruit is ripe, the tannin fine, the approach open: a Burgundy that doesn't need to be cellared away.
Terroir and origin
La Justice lies below the D974, which might make the plot seem unremarkable on its own. What makes the difference is a fault of Comblanchien limestone, topped by a sandy layer that ensures good drainage. Galeyrand's vines here are 60 to 70 years old and of such quality that he uses them for selection massale. The vineyard work is organic, partly biodynamic, and highly labour-intensive.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, around 80% destemmed and fermented in tank, using exclusively native yeasts. Ageing took place over 14 months in used 228-litre oak barrels with up to 25% new oak. No fining, no enzymes, only light filtration if needed, and no or very little sulphur.
On the palate
In the glass, a medium, transparent ruby red. The opening is still slightly reductive, a hint of tar that quickly fades to reveal raspberry, wild strawberry, plum and cherry, underscored by forest floor, undergrowth, a touch of iron-rich stone and herbs. The flow is ripe and juicy, the tannin almost polished, the acidity ripe, the fruit slightly candied. The finish is long, carrying notes of confit strawberries.
Specifics
Jérôme Galeyrand arrived in Gevrey-Chambertin without a winegrowing family behind him; before wine, he spent eight years in the cheese trade. In 2002 he bought his first plot of 0.05 hectares; today the Domaine, based in Saint-Philibert, farms 5.25 hectares. In 2020 he received a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
