About this wine

Character

Apricot with faintly orange, silky-matte reflections in the glass. The nose is generous and expansive: orange blossom, orange zest, mandarin and small apricot, then with increasing aeration white pepper, vetiver, mace, allspice and chestnut honey. The Traminer perfume stays restrained throughout.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from two steep vineyards in Signat and Unterplatten, at around 500 metres above the Bolzano basin. Martin Gojer has farmed the sites biodynamically and by hand since 2009. The estate's plots face northwest, are shaded by forest and swept by cool downslope winds, with volcanic soils of porphyry, basalt and granite.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Gewürztraminer, picked early and foot-trodden. The must spent five days on the skins without temperature control, fermented spontaneously with part of the stems included. Six months followed in used chestnut-wood tonneaux, after which the wine rested in concrete until the following October. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with only minimal sulphur added.

On the palate

The attack brings orange blossom, zest, green mandarin and kumquat, along with apricot and dried quince, spiced with pale tobacco, white pepper and black cardamom. The fine phenolics lend freshness, while the low acidity carries the wine calmly and steadily.

Food pairing recommendations

A wine with many possibilities at the table, even without Munster cheese and crayfish.

Special features

Eight Breton Ouessant dwarf sheep graze among the pergola vines, keeping the undergrowth short. Martin and Marion farm just under four hectares, make their own biodynamic preparations, and forgo synthetic plant protection and chemical fertilisers. Many of the old pergola trellises have been preserved.
