About this wine

Character

A Blaufränkisch of puristic clarity and cool finesse. The colour remains bright with a quite transparent ruby red, while the aroma is intense: black cherries and sour cherries, plums and sloes, backed by earth and undergrowth, damp forest floor, and a hint of ivy. Complemented by wet stone with petrichor, hung venison, and fermented cardamom.

Terroir and Origin

The grapes originate from the southeast-facing hillside site Windener Alter Berg in the Leitha Mountains. Above the vineyard lies cooling forest, below opens the view of Lake Neusiedl, and cherry trees grow among the rows. The soil is defined by barren limestone. Gernot and Heike Heinrich built their winery in Gols parcel by parcel over decades, often acquiring the steep, stony sites that others abandoned.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Blaufränkisch, hand-harvested in early October. The mash fermented spontaneously for three weeks in wooden open-top fermenters, followed by gentle pressing in a basket press. The wine matured for 29 months in cellar amphorae and used 500-litre oak casks. 13.0% ABV, dry.

On the Palate

Decanting and a Burgundy glass allow it to truly blossom: then the immense tension and vibrant minerality pulsating within this dark fruit come to the fore. The cool clarity is enhanced by flashes of sweet fruit and yeast notes, which lend the wine a subtle charm.

Food Pairings

Braised shoulder of venison with redcurrant jelly, dark chocolate, and Brussels sprouts, filet mignon stuffed with chestnuts and plums, or as a vegetarian option, leek lasagne with Bleu des Causses and walnuts.

Special Features

The winery has been farming biodynamically since 2006, is Demeter-certified, and is a founding member of respekt-BIODYN. In the cellar, gravity is used instead of pumps, and clay amphorae are increasingly replacing small oak barrels.
