About this wine
Character
The 4 éléments Pinot Meunier La Grosse Pierre Extra Brut 2018 is a single-varietal vintage champagne from Huré Frères in Ludes. The 4 éléments series reverses the champagne principle of blending: each grape variety comes from a single plot and is vinified on its own. Here, Pinot Meunier stands alone, with juicy fruit and a clear line.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the La Grosse Pierre plot. Huré Frères farms ten hectares of Premier Cru sites in Ludes and Villedommange. Ludes lies east of the Montagne de Reims, where chalky clay soils produce elegant, age-worthy wines. Pierre Huré is responsible for the vineyard work, François Huré for the cellar.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Pinot Meunier, the variety that contributes juicy fruit in the classic cuvée and here shows its own structure. Ageing takes place plot by plot, and the wine is bottled as Extra Brut: the dosage stays minimal and masks nothing. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
Straw yellow in the glass, with a fine, lasting perlage. On the nose, ripe yellow plum, red apple and subtle yeast notes. The wine tastes dry and firm, with juicy fruit carried on a taut, mineral freshness through to the finish.
Food pairings
With pan-fried pikeperch, skin-on, shellfish and roasted quail breast. Also with mushroom risotto, Pata Negra ham and aged Comté.
Special features
A single-vineyard champagne from the 2018 vintage, with no blending of other plots or grape varieties. The estate in Ludes is now run by its third generation: by François Huré since 2008, joined by his brother Pierre since 2012.
