About this wine
Character
A mature vintage champagne that holds power and elegance together: deep and complex, yet finely chiselled and fresh. The nose shows white blossom and white-fleshed fruit, green and yellow citrus, followed by pastry with notes of nuts and almond.
Terroir and origin
Huré Frères is based in Ludes, in the eastern part of the Montagne de Reims, where chalky-clay soils produce elegant, age-worthy wines. The grapes for this cuvée come from various north-facing plots. Pierre Huré tends the ten hectares of Premier Cru vineyards in Ludes and Villedommange.
Grape variety and winemaking
60 percent Chardonnay and 40 percent Pinot Noir. The base wine was aged in new 350-litre barrels, with François Huré overseeing the cellar work. The champagne then rested twelve years sur lattes under natural cork, a maturation period that allows the oak and lees to integrate fully.
On the palate
The opening is fresh, with good acidic drive and a vibrant, almost tonic minerality. The fruit is crisp and ripe. Barrel ageing and maturation under cork have given a creamy texture that doesn't come at the expense of freshness; the balance holds through to the saline finish.
Distinctive features
This cuvée comes from the experimental laboratory of brothers François and Pierre Huré, who run the family estate in its third generation. The long lees contact under natural cork is labour-intensive and hard to repeat: it's unlikely this champagne will ever exist again in this exact form.
