About this wine
Character
A red wine that forgoes weight: 13.5% ABV, made dry, with acidity as its backbone. It belongs to the InStabile series from Vins Nus, whose bottles carry numbers and Latin subtitles rather than vineyard names, and whose one fixed rule is: no sulphur, ever.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow near Cornudella del Montsant and Siurana, between 700 and 820 metres, on north-facing yellow clay soils surrounded by the natural park. Nights here stay cool even in high summer, and that is precisely what preserves the acidity in the grapes.
Grape variety and winemaking
Grenache and Grenache Gris, the grey-orange mutation of red Grenache. The old vines grow in the traditional gobelet (bush) training, some over 40 years old, and yields are tiny. Vins Nus, Catalan for "naked wines", works without extraction, with virtually no oak, no added alcohol and no added sulphur. Colour and structure are left untouched, what remains is simply what the grapes bring.
On the palate
Transparent garnet red in the glass, with wild raspberry and red apple on the nose, followed by a floral note. The wine stays lean and nimble, acidity leads the way, and the finish is clean and saline-fresh. Serve lightly chilled.
Special features
Alfredo Arribas, an architect from Barcelona, founded Vins Nus in 2005 after discovering vineyards above 700 metres in the cooler, north-western part of the Montsant. The labels feature Alexander Calder's kinetic mobiles, sculptures set in motion by the wind. A wine with no added sulphur that keeps moving, in the bottle as in the glass.
