About this wine

Character

Dry, taut, without technical polish. The wine relies on the natural acidity of the Grillo grape and on an aromatic profile where herbs and almond set the tone.

Terroir and origin

Western Sicily, Samperi near Marsala, limestone-rich soils. It was here that Marco de Bartoli, a racing driver for ten years, returned to the family estate in the 1970s, bottling his first barriques in 1978. Today his children carry on his work: Renato oversees the vineyards and cellar in Samperi, Sebastiano tends the volcanic island of Pantelleria, and Giuseppina runs the administration.

Grape variety and vinification

Grillo has been at home on the limestone soils around Marsala since Phoenician times. The variety brings high natural acidity and reaches high alcohol levels without losing its elegance. 3,500 vines per hectare, trained in the traditional alberello or guyot system. In 1990 the estate bottled its first varietal Grillo white wine, the Grappoli del Grillo, at a time when the grape was regarded almost exclusively as a base wine for Marsala.

On the palate

Lemon peel, white peach and Mediterranean herbs over a saline foundation, with green almond, taut acidity and a finish of bitter almond.

Food recommendations

Caponata, fritto misto di mare and pasta con le sarde, as well as grilled octopus with lemon oil or pesto alla Trapanese with almonds and tomatoes.

Special features

Orange wine made from pure Grillo, dry, under the Sicilia DOC. The family farms 30 hectares organically, harvests exclusively by hand and works with native yeasts.
