About this wine
Character
A medium-bodied Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin in which the aromatics take the lead: red fruit, blossom and mild spice over a finely knit structure. The 2022 already drinks openly, while hinting at what still lies ahead of it.
Terroir and origin
The En Billard vineyard lies in Gevrey-Chambertin, close to the winery's cellar. The vines there were planted in 1983. Jérôme Galeyrand farms around 5.25 hectares in the Côte de Nuits, from Marsannay through Fixin to Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyards are worked organically and biodynamically and ploughed by hand, the harvest is done manually, and lunar cycles are taken into account.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. After hand-harvesting, the grapes were 70% destemmed, fermented in tank and aged for 24 months in used oak barrels with roughly 25% new wood. Galeyrand works without industrial yeast, without fining agents or enzymes, and with as little sulphur as possible. 3170 bottles were filled.
On the palate
The nose stays light on its feet: cherry and wild raspberry, topped by a floral lift of lilac, alongside mace, liquorice, clove and a light touch of oak. On entry the fruit leads, with dark forest fruit moving from raspberry toward blackberry. The tannins are noticeable but stay in the low-to-medium range. A wine for large glasses.
Food pairings
Oven-braised hare with spring cabbage and polenta, pan-fried monkfish wrapped in bacon with tomato compote and star anise, or quince and prune tagine with aubergine.
Details
Galeyrand hails from the Loire and came to Burgundy as a career changer, with formative years under Alain Burguet and Vincent Geantet and a first parcel of just 0.05 hectares. In 2020 he was awarded a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
