About this wine
Character
A village wine that shows its fruit openly while remaining translucent, without losing any concentration. Dark garnet red in the glass, precise and fragrant in expression.
Terroir and origin
Gevrey-Chambertin lies in the Côte de Nuits; Jérôme Galeyrand's domaine sits in Saint-Philibert east of the village, with the cellar right in the heart of the wine town. Galeyrand hails from the Loire, arrived in Burgundy without a winegrowing family behind him, and trained under Alain Burguet and Vincent Geantet. The first plot of 0.05 hectares has since grown into 5.25 hectares, spanning Marsannay, Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, hand-harvested. The vineyards are ploughed rather than chemically treated, and pesticides are ruled out. In the cellar, Galeyrand works with fresh grape juice: no industrial yeast, no fining agents, no enzymes, and sulphur kept to the strict minimum. The proportion of whole clusters varies by cuvée and vintage. The red wines age for 18 to 24 months in oak barrels sourced from French forests, with the share of new wood deliberately kept low.
On the palate
Silky texture, fine and deep fruit, juicy extract. The phenolics gently frame the palate, the tannins feel finely grained and polished like the finest powder, lending the wine an extra sweetness. No heaviness, no rough edges, just a long, nonchalant finish.
Food pairings
With stuffed red peppers, pan-fried Sichuan shrimp in mala style and Sichuan chili chicken.
Highlights
The vineyards have been organically certified since 2019 and are farmed biodynamically, right down to following the lunar cycles. Depending on the vintage, production totals around 2,000 cases, or roughly 24,000 bottles. In 2020, Jérôme Galeyrand received a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
