About this wine
Character
The Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2021 by Ökonomierat Rebholz is a bone-dry Grand Cru from the Pfalz that reveals its power gradually. The nose is herbaceous, with a hint of forest and meadow and a touch of forest honey: verbena and lemon balm, apple and apple skin, plus a little cassis and a subtle passion fruit note that broadens the spectrum without ever becoming loud.
Terroir and origin
The Kastanienbusch vineyard lies west of Birkweiler at the edge of a valley basin, sheltered from the cool winds off the Pfälzer Wald forest. At 320 metres above sea level, it is the highest GG vineyard in the Pfalz. The vineyard, made up of loose granite, schist and melaphyre deposits over iron-rich Upper Rotliegend, slopes at 30 to 35%. Rebholz's parcels form part of the vineyard's original plot.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, destemmed and left on the skins for around 24 hours. After settling and natural sedimentation, the wine fermented in stainless steel, followed by six months' ageing on fine lees. Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz farm their top sites in Siebeldingen biodynamically and vinify to full, dry fermentation.
On the palate
Initially very juicy, fresh and youthful. Over a base of lemon curd come white blossom, once again verbena and lemon balm, plus pear and peach slices. The wine then unfolds, gaining pressure and, with air and warmth, becoming smokier, stonier, firmer and more gripping. The lightness is only a first impression — depth lies beneath.
Food pairing suggestions
Salt-crust sea bass with rosemary and lemon sauce, pike with yellow carrots, pointed cabbage, anise and fresh woodruff, and, for a vegetarian option, risotto with spring leek, parmesan and puffed rice.
Special features
The 2017 vintage of this wine was rated 100 points by Gault&Millau. In the 1500 ml magnum format, the Riesling matures more slowly, and while young it is still far from having reached its peak.
