About this wine
Character
This Riesling doesn't need volume to make its point: focused, clear, powerful and delicate at the same time. The nose is shy at first, then turns fine and elegant, with greengage, mirabelle plum and grated apple, alongside physalis, star fruit, white tea, almond, thyme, calendula and a hint of pepper.
Terroir and origin
The Kastanienbusch vineyard lies west of Birkweiler at the edge of a natural amphitheatre, sheltered from the cool winds off the Palatinate Forest. At 320 metres above sea level, it is the highest GG vineyard in the southern Palatinate. The soil is iron-rich Upper Rotliegend with loose deposits of granite, slate and melaphyre, and the slope reaches 30 to 35 percent. Rebholz's parcels form part of the vineyard's original plot.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, destemmed and left on the skins for around 24 hours. After settling and natural sedimentation, the wine fermented in stainless steel and matured for six months on fine lees. Fully fermented dry, at 12.0% ABV.
On the palate
Present and with great depth of fruit: stone fruit, grapefruit, kumquat and bitter orange, along with peel and zest. The acidity stays silky, the mineral tension carries far, and the 12.0% ABV never draws attention to itself. The finish is long and calm.
Special features
Hansjörg Rebholz farms the Siebeldingen vineyards biodynamically and vinifies his wines bone dry. The 2017 vintage from Kastanienbusch was rated 100 points by Gault&Millau. The 1500 ml magnum gives this wine time for slow development.
