About this wine
Character
A Chardonnay that seeks tension rather than fullness. It belongs to the R line from Ökonomierat Rebholz, under which Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz age their Burgundy varieties in small oak barrels in Siebeldingen: fully fermented, bone dry, without polish.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on limestone-marked parcels around Siebeldingen in the Palatinate. The deep clay soils carry limestone components and gravel that ensure drainage and give the wine its mineral character. The family farms its 26 hectares on the edge of the Palatinate Forest biodynamically, across a mosaic of four rock formations, from the Rotliegend to shell limestone.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Chardonnay. Pressed in a basket press, fermented in small oak barrels, after which the wine spends a total of around 18 months in barrique on the lees. Bottled at 13.0% ABV.
On the palate
The nose stays clean and cool: wet chalk, the smell of wet asphalt after a summer rain, only behind that faint stone fruit and citrus notes with a subtle smoky nuance. The entry is firm, first presenting the mineral foundation, then followed by mirabelle plum, apple and green apricot, along with a hint of fresh pastry. This is carried by saline minerality, flanked by citrus, and salted almonds remain in the aftertaste. The finish lingers on for a very long time.
Special features
Bottled in the 1500 ml Magnum. Chardonnay is no side note in Siebeldingen: in the R line, the estate shows that even international varieties can find their Palatinate identity here. What began in 1889 with great-great-grandfather Eduard Rebholz as a natural wine philosophy is carried on today by Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz with their twin sons Hans and Valentin.
