About this wine

Character

A sweet Furmint whose aroma initially wants nothing to do with sweetness: it appears dry, dark, and spicy. Only on the palate do the 46 grams of residual sugar emerge, and even there, acidity and spice keep them in check.

Terroir and Origin

The grapes hail from the Lapis vineyard, one of Királyudvar's Grand Cru sites in Tokaj. Anthony Hwang took over the former purveyor to the Habsburg court in 1997; since 2008, the estate has operated fully biodynamically across its 75 hectares, with Szabolcs Juhász overseeing the winemaking since 2009.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Varietal Furmint, harvested on 21 September 2018. Following a gentle, slow pressing, the must fermented spontaneously in 2.25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks. Bottling took place after six months with 13.5% alcohol, 46 grams of residual sugar, and 4.9 grams of acidity at a pH of 3.4.

On the Palate

The attack is carried equally by sweetness and acidity. Ripe stone fruit and both crisp and ripe pome fruit meet citrus juice and zest, joined by mushrooms, black tea, and stony spice, underpinned by clean, elegant botrytis. The acidity feels more discreet here than promised by the nose, with its notes of malted chicory, tobacco, dried apricots, and green apples.

Food Pairings

With quail with creamy foam, runny egg, and Périgord truffle, with Bánh Xèo (the Vietnamese stuffed pancakes with meat, poultry, or seafood), and with apple tart.

Key Facts

The biodynamic approach is guided by preparations and lunar cycles, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. In terms of colour, the wine presents a rather light, radiant golden yellow.
