About this wine

Character

With 3.0% ABV and more than 548 grams of residual sugar, the Tokaji Esszencia 2002 sits at the very outer edge of what is defined as wine. Dark amber in the glass, the nose is profound and concentrated yet remarkably dynamic: candied and stewed quince, perry pear, blond tobacco, leather polish, and wax, accompanied by malt, rock candy, smoke, and liquorice, followed by the mushroom and raisin notes of clean botrytis.

Terroir and Origin

The grapes are cultivated in the Danczka and Lapis vineyards in Tokaj. Királyudvar, once a supplier to the Habsburg Imperial Court, has been rebuilt by Anthony Hwang since 1997; since 2008, the estate has farmed its 75 hectares entirely biodynamically, with preparations and lunar cycles guiding the work in both vineyard and cellar.

Grape Variety and Vinification

A cuvée of 74% Furmint and 26% Hárslevelű, harvested in November 2002. Only the free-run juice, released solely under the natural weight of the botrytised berries, goes into the bottle. Ageing lasted over 66 months in demijohns (glass carboys); the sugar level is so high that fermentation naturally ceases at 3.0% ABV.

On the Palate

Viscous and creamy. The 13.4 grams of acidity balance the sweetness and keep the wine dynamic. Joining the aromas found on the nose are the delicate bitter notes of orange and grapefruit, alongside a touch of Earl Grey. The density is immense; small sips are all that is needed.

Food Pairings

A selection of mature blue cheeses, seared foie gras with lamb's lettuce and caramelised nuts, or a Victorian Christmas pudding.

Special Attributes

At the pinnacle of Királyudvar's portfolio stands the Esszencia, a nectar requiring decades of maturation. Co-founder and initial winemaker István Szepsy laid the groundwork, while Szabolcs Juhász has been responsible for winemaking since 2009. Bottled in 500 millilitres.
