About this wine
Character
Deep amber in the glass, and already the nose operates on multiple levels simultaneously: a spicy opening of white pepper and light rolling tobacco, underpinned by the noble-rot aromatics of botrytized berries and nuanced with carbolic notes. Then quince paste, peach nectar, and dripping, richly filled honeycombs, alongside old leather, floor polish, and a bowl of raisins.
Terroir and Origin
Tokaj in northeastern Hungary. Királyudvar, the former Habsburg court supplier, was revived in 1997 by Anthony Hwang; István Szepsy laid the foundation for the estate's Aszú renaissance as its initial winemaker, and since 2009 Szabolcs Juhász has overseen vinification across 75 hectares including the Grand Cru sites Lapis and Henye as well as Percze, Becsek, Danczka, and Nyulászó.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Furmint and Hárslevelü. Eszencia sits at the very apex of the Tokaj hierarchy: it is crafted solely from the free-run juice that gently seeps out under the natural weight of botrytized berries, requiring decades of maturation. The result is 464 grams of residual sugar at 4.0% ABV.
On the Palate
On the initial attack, these 464 grams are astonishingly well integrated. Viscous, with an oily texture and immense density, showing Darjeeling tea, orange oil, and candied orange peel, balanced by a mature, refined nerve of acidity. The finish remains ambrosial, with an ageing perspective spanning at least the next 50 years.
Food Pairings
Aged Roquefort, pan-seared non-gavage goose liver served plain, or fresh venison liver on mugwort brioche.
Special Features
Since 2008, Királyudvar has been working entirely biodynamically, employing preparations and lunar cycles in both the vineyard and cellar. Bottled in a 500 ml format.
