About this wine
Character
A Spätburgunder that combines power and finesse: mineral at its core, fresh, clearly structured and without heaviness. The biodynamic work in the vineyard translates into a vivid liveliness in the glass.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on the sun-drenched southern tip of the Tuniberg near Freiburg in Baden, on fertile loess soil. This soil stores warmth and gives the wines power. Alfalfa, buckwheat and various clover species grow between the vine rows, supplying the loess with nutrients and promoting soil life. Klaus and Maj Britt Vorgrimmler farm 3.2 hectares, 65 percent of which is planted with Pinot Noir.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), hand-harvested and gently processed. Fermentation takes place in open vats, using the natural yeast flora of the estate's own vineyards. All vineyard work follows Maria Thun's biodynamic calendar. 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Transparent ruby red with garnet highlights. On the nose, ripe wild cherry and wild raspberry, followed by a smoky spiciness. Juicy and finely structured, with silky tannins, fresh acidity and a mineral finish.
Food pairing recommendations
With roasted duck breast, roasted pheasant, braised hare stew or risotto with wild mushrooms. Also pairs well with aged mountain cheese.
Special features
The estate has been farming organically since 1985 and has been certified according to Demeter guidelines since 2006; the Demeter logo appears on the label. As a demonstration farm for the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, it offers vineyard walks, including in English. Particular attention is given to promoting insect biodiversity between the vine rows.
