About this wine
Character
The L'Enclume Brut Nature 2013 is a vintage Champagne made from single-varietal Chardonnay, grown in the Lieu-dit L'Enclume, aged ten years on the lees and bottled with zero grams of dosage. Brut Nature means that no sugar is added after the second fermentation. Nothing can be adjusted afterwards, so the wine has to carry itself.
Terroir and origin
The Tarlant family has been based in Œuilly since 1687 and farms 14 hectares split across more than 55 parcels. Benoît and Mélanie Tarlant now run the estate in the twelfth generation. Bottling a single lieu-dit separately follows directly from this parcel-by-parcel approach: not a blend, but a single origin.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Chardonnay. The vines are farmed organically, and in the cellar the wine is fermented with wild yeasts in barrel, without malolactic fermentation and without filtration. Ten years on the lees before disgorgement, 12.0% ABV.
On the palate
The nose is purist and precisely drawn: lemon, green apple, white blossom, along with crusty baguette with salted butter and freshly stirred yeast. On the palate this impression is confirmed instantly, the saliva starts flowing, and a saline note lingers like a sea breeze. Pale golden yellow, silvery highlights, a fine, finely dispersed mousse.
Food pairings
A Champagne for the apéritif and for dishes marked by minerality, finesse and depth.
Distinctive features
Tarlant has been bottling Champagne without any dosage since the late 1970s, and today over 90 percent of production is Brut Nature. The estate cultivates all seven grape varieties permitted in Champagne. Farming is organic, guided by biodynamic practices, though the house does not pursue official certification.
