About this wine
Character
The La Poza de Ballesteros 2021 is a single-parcel Tempranillo from the Rioja Alavesa, holding density and cool tension at once. Deep and multi-layered, with dark fruit and an earthy minerality that carries its full body.
Terroir and origin
The La Poza de Ballesteros vineyard covers 1.2 hectares, west-facing at around 600 metres of altitude in the municipality of Elvillar, and belongs to the higher, cooler part of the Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The soil is clay-sandy and calcareous, with iron-rich clays.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Tempranillo from 63-year-old vines. The grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously, then aged in oak barrels of varying size and age. The vineyard is farmed without herbicides or synthetic chemicals. The wine is 14.5% ABV and dry.
On the palate
Noble, mouth-filling tannins, mineral pressure and a juicy drive. Vibrant acidity and a velvety texture keep the round body in motion, while the black cherry and blackberry stay cool. The finish is long, with fine-grained tannin lingering softly.
Food pairings
With leg of lamb, as well as a classic Pizza Margherita.
Distinctive features
Artadi left the DOCa Rioja at the end of 2015, whose regulations did not even permit naming individual vineyards on the label. Since then, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle's wines carry the name of their parcel instead of an ageing category. Vinification still takes place in Laguardia.
