About this wine
Character
Intense straw yellow in the glass. On the nose, the wine is initially reserved before opening up to citrus, crisp pear and apple, yellow plum and starfruit; behind this lies a warm, creamy note of pastry, a chalky touch and white blossom. A Chardonnay that holds richness and acidity in balance.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from two hectares at 230 metres altitude in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The 40- to 55-year-old vines grow on clay and limestone soil from the Jura's Bajocian era. The Bret brothers farm a total of 12 hectares biodynamically, following the principles of Rudolf Steiner and partly using horse-drawn work to avoid soil compaction.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. Hand-harvested from 23 to 29 August 2022, followed by whole-cluster pressing and spontaneous fermentation with the estate's own yeasts. Ageing took place 80 percent in tank and 20 percent in 228-litre pièces, with complete malolactic fermentation. Total sulphur 36 mg/l, pH 3.24.
On the palate
Silky, juicy and round, with ripe citrus and stone fruit and white peach. The acid structure is pronounced yet silky, carrying through to a long finish supported by fine tannin. 13.0% vol., dry.
Food pairings
Butter chicken with fenugreek, gratinated scallops with starfruit mignonette or cauliflower tabbouleh with apples, walnuts and coriander.
Special features
La Soufrandière in Vinzelles dates back to 1947, when Jules Bret acquired one hectare in the Clos de Grand-Père. His grandsons Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have run the estate since 2000 and converted it to biodynamic viticulture; Marc-Antoine has worked alongside them since 2010. Ecocert organic certification since 2003, Demeter since 2006.
